چکیده

THE events taking place as a patient emerges from anaesthesia are not well understood and several theories have been advanced to explain the phenomena that occur during this period. However, their exact cause will probably not be found as long as the basic mechanisms of anaesthesia are not entirely clear. A small number of clinical facts are, nevertheless, well established; an example is the wellknown inordinate behaviour of alcoholics during emergence. But a number of very basic facts need clarification. Does the age, sex or constitution of a patient have any definite influence on emergence from anaesthesia? What are the effects of the anaesthetic agent, the duration of procedure and the site of operation on emergence? This report of our observations in the immediate postanaesthesia period is related to these questions. These observations will help us to gain more knowledge of the problem and may enable us to make progress toward more rational and effective methods of treating and preventing postanaesthetic delirium.

Fast tracking in ambulatory surgery.

Fast tracking after ambulatory surgery is a new paradigm which involves transferring patients from the operating room to the phase II recovery unit (i.e. bypassing the postanaesthesia care unit). The success of fast tracking depends upon appropriate modification of the anaesthetic technique, which would allow rapid emergence from anaesthesia, and the prevention of common postoperative complicat...

Deficits in information transfer between anaesthesiologist and postanaesthesia care unit staff: an analysis of patient handover.

BACKGROUND The immediate postoperative period is important, as the patient recovers from the acute derangements resulting from the surgical insult and anaesthesia. Incomplete or incorrect communication between the anaesthesiologist and the postanaesthesia care unit nurse during the transfer process may lead to dangerous clinical mistakes. The literature examining handovers from operating room t...

A Qualitative Study: Why Prolonged Stay in the Recovery Room?

There are a number of factors that prolong patients’ stay in the recovery room (RR), which are related to system or clinical issues. However, less has been discovered from the RR nurses about reasons for prolonged patient stay and recommendations to solve this issue. Prolonged patient stay of more than 2 hours in the RR interferes with the primary role of the RR nurse, which is to provide care ...

Patients' perception of music versus ordinary sound in a postanaesthesia care unit: a randomised crossover trial.

We performed an experimental single-blind crossover design study in a postanaesthesia care unit (PACU): (i) to test the hypothesis that patients will experience a higher degree of wellbeing if they listen to music compared to ordinary PACU sounds during their early postoperative care, (ii) to determine if there is a difference over time, and (iii) to evaluate the importance of the acoustic envi...
